DOG BREED SHOW
International Judge: MR HARRY VELLA (MALTA)
I was born in the USA but I have lived in MALTA since I was 4 years old.   I always remember having dogs in the house and used to attend shows but I can say that I started to show seriously in the early eighties when I had a Cocker Spaniel.  In 1986 I imported a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel from Dianne Fry from the UK.   He was Malta Champion Amantra Sea Guard or Sonny as we called him.   He was a very  nice blenheim boy and still holds the record of the only Cavalier to win Best in Show at an all breeds show in Malta.  Two years after my first Cavalier, I was in England watching Crufts and this is where I saw my beloved French Bulldogs, a few weeks later I bought my first puppy from Dianne Searle - Malta Champion Sanshay Iceberg - he was the winner of various awards in Malta including 3 Best in Shows.
Our latest adventure when it comes to breeding is with Whippets.  Although they belong to my daughter Stacey, I am also very fond of this magnificent breed and we had our first litter in April, both parents were imported from one of the top kennels in the world which is Nevdith owned by Nev and Editha Newton.   During my time in dogs I also had Welsh Terriers, German Spitz and Cocker Spaniels and were all shown with success.
My first judging appointment was in England and it was a club match.  Although I was very nervous at first, I remember I really enjoyed it and my winner was a Miniature Schnauzer.  After that I judged several shows in the UK and in 1999 when Malta joined the FCI as an associate member, our kennel club recommended me as an International Judge.
I have judged in several countries which include the UK, Holland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Finland, Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Macedonia and Latvia and forthcoming appointments in Germany, Russia, Italy, Estonia, Finland, Holland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Sweden.

DOG GROOMING COMPETITION
Judge:   Fran Cristina-Browning (Gauteng)
"Braganza Poodles" Standard & Miniature.
I have been involved in Poodles all her life.    My first dog that I showed to a record breaking career, was a white miniature poodle and have been involved ever since.       I have always groomed my own dogs together with my sister, Jackie.  We have been both amateur and professional groomers over the years. We owned the Last Dog Post in Lombardy East for many years and latterly own and run Posh Paws in Benoni.
As a person who owns breeds that require high levels of maintenance in keeping and looking after coats and being involved in grooming, I feel that South African owners and their dogs deserve a better level of grooming expertise from their grooming parlours.  Hopefully this years competition will demonstrate to Capetonians what can be done and what they should expect from their groomer. I am greatly looking forward to the assignment.
